Since leaving The Times, Klein has written many articles for Vanity Fair and other national magazines. For Parade, he wrote “Walter Scott’s Personality Parade,” the most widely read column in the English language.
His eleven nonfiction books have all appeared on The New York Times Best Seller List. They include: All Too Human: The Love Story of Jack and Jackie Kennedy; Just Jackie: Her Private Years; The Kennedy Curse; Farewell Jackie; The Truth About Hillary; Katie: The Real Story; Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died; The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House; Blood Feud: The Clintons Vs. Alec Klein, the founder of Matthew 56 Consulting, LLC, is an award-winning journalist and bestselling author.
Klein, who graduated from Stuyvesant High School and earned a Phi Beta Kappa key from Brown University, began his career as a journalist, working at the Virginian-Pilot, the Baltimore Sun, the Wall Street Journal and then the Washington Post, where he was an investigative reporter for several years. His investigative reporting led to significant reforms, congressional hearings, federal law, criminal convictions and more than half a billion dollars in government fines. Klein won a number of national awards, including the Gerald Loeb Award, business journalism’s highest honor.
His first book, Stealing Time: Steve Case, Jerry Levin, and the Collapse of AOL Time Warner, was a national bestseller published by Simon & Schuster. The book was translated into Japanese and Chinese, excerpted in Great Britain and selected as one of the “Best Business Books” by Library Journal and Strategy + Business.
His second book of nonfiction, A Class Apart: Prodigies, Pressure, and Passion Inside One of America’s Best High Schools, also published by Simon & Schuster, was named “One of the Best Education Books of the Year” by the American School Board Journal and translated into Chinese, where it went through several printings.
Klein taught at American and Georgetown universities until leaving the Washington Post to become a full, tenured professor at Northwestern University, where he was named director of The Medill Justice Project. Klein led investigations that helped to set free prisoners who had been wrongfully convicted.
Under Klein’s leadership, The Medill Justice Project rose to become a national center, earning widespread recognition for its investigations, including a national Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the first in Medill’s history.
After a decade at Northwestern, Klein worked to create a system that, so far, has helped dozens of excessively sentenced women gain their freedom through parole and commutation.
Klein is the author of several staged plays, a novel and the foreword to an edition of Show Me The Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication, a textbook adopted at universities across the nation. A frequent guest speaker on television, he has also conducted workshops and given speeches throughout the country and world about his work.
